Visual Thinking for Design

Ware, C. (2010). Visual Thinking for Design (1st edition). Morgan Kaufmann.

To create effective designs, it’s important to understand how the human brain works. Because humans can only process the visuals they need to complete the task at hand, and see one very small spot clearly at a time, designs must be able to capture attention and drive eye movements. Color, form, and space can all be used to guide the viewer’s processing. Recognizable objects, symbols, and patterns can also be used to quickly create meaning.

This book provided both foundational theories and detailed, tactical information about how design can be used to communicate effectively. In my work as a social media director, I oversee a designer who makes graphics for our channels. This information will help me guide the creation of more effective designs.

Learning Outcome 6: Create and deliver elegant messages appropriate to audience, purpose, and context.
