With the rise of new technologies and increased interconnectedness, the world is more complex and unpredictable than ever, boundaries are disappearing, and change is needed more often. This makes it harder for leaders to establish a strong vision for the future. At the same time, public trust in leaders is decreasing. To build trust and spur change as a leader in this environment, logical action alone is not enough. Authentic leadership communication requires discovering what matters to them, applying courage and discipline, deciding to lead, and connecting with others. To communicate with the kind of authenticity that fosters trust, leaders must be in tune with their own emotions, discover and frequently reflect upon their values and passions, and be unafraid to genuinely share that emotion and passion with stakeholders.

As someone who is always seeking to grow as a leader, this article’s direction was eye-opening yet affirming. Societal stereotypes around what it means to be a leader and “professional” tend to portray emotion as a bad thing. I’ve always felt that to be inauthentic to who I am as a person, and often choose to lead – mindfully, of course – in a way that is in line with my beliefs and emotions. Reading this, I see that being authentic isn’t unprofessional, and in fact, can make for great, trustworthy, galvanizing leadership.
